Aristotles Quote on Dignity

"Dignity does not consist in possessing honors, but in deserving them." -Aristotle

About Aristotle

Aristotle (394-322 BCE) was a Greek philosopher. He was a student of Plato and then the teacher of Alexander the Great. He is widely considered as one of the greatest thinkers in the history of mankind. He covered many subjects, from government to biology. He had also done artistic works like poetry, theatre, and music. Unfortunately, much of his works were lost in history, and that it is estimated that only about a third of his works have survived.

Explanation

Dignity may be something that any man would not say no to. It is something that can be gained by a person of any financial, political, and social status. One can have dignity even if he has no money. On the other hand, riches and high political office, as history showed, is not a guarantee to gain dignity. Dignity, if not handled properly, can eventually be lost. But the good thing about this it, dignity can be gained, if one is willing to work hard for it. One of the most widely known ways on how one can achieve dignity—with all those respect and reverence—is to gain honor. The problem is, honor is not that easy to gain either. One should be worthy for the honor, to actually deserve whatever it is that was bestowed to you—for you to be able to feel that unadulterated dignity. And the bottom line of all these is of course, working hard, sometimes really hard, for it—for it is only through hard work that you can actually deserve something that you gained, especially dignity.
